RE: Think twice about Gift Cards this year

There's lots of misinformation in that opening post.. Talbot's, for one, is closing a tiny percentage of their women's stores, and already closed the men's and kids' stores a while ago.

RE: Woman loses 400K to Nigerian Email Scam

The thing that always bothers me the most about stories like this is: If they're so stupid, how'd they get all that dough in the first place? Maybe she's Britney's grandma?

RE: campers world new jersey

I've overnighted there. It's at the edge of an industrial park that empties out at 5 PM. I looked up from my dinner and saw deer in the field next to the parking lot, and then a buzzard on the exit road when I was leaving the next morning. In other words, more peace and quiet and wildlife than at most campgrounds.

RE: NUVI????

It has an umlaut (double dots) over the U, so it's not likely to be an acronym, at least not for a word in English. I always figured it was a made-up foreign-sounding name like Haagen-Dazs

RE: Another winterizing question

Many people who leave valves and plugs open in the winter find out in the spring that little varmints (some with 4 legs, some with 6) love those sheltered places. Most of us leave everything closed. I've never taken any extra effort to put anything in the black or grey tanks after the final dump and cleanout. Since the main issue in the water system is damage from expansion, there's no risk in leaving a small amount of water in the tanks; there's plenty of room for it to expand.

RE: GEO Method, one more time

Yes, the liquid is more convenient to use, but then it becomes one more liquid thing that has to be removed from the RV when winterizing.
You'd have an opinion on "excessive suds" if you'd ever seen it boiling back up out of the hole at the dump station, as I once witnessed. I wonder if we could award that guy his "white wings," a la the "brown wings" that are given out for the more common dump station mishaps.
"I contacted the Calgon company to ask about this use and there reply was that it has no real value in such conditions and that as a mineral precipitation agent, it would take several gallons in order to counteract the minerals from urine that is in most waste tanks. "
Apparently the Calgon folks didn't understand the question.

RE: 5th wheel break-in, almost stripprd

... This break-in/theft had to have taken hours, how was this unnoticed. ...
Kas, I'm so sorry to hear about this mess and I hope it gets resolved satisfactorily.
There is one group of people who can enter and leave the storage area at will, stay for hours without arousing suspicion, even arriving and leaving with a vehicle large enough to haul all your stuff: The other storage customers. A second group of suspects would be: The storage facility employees.
There's a thread on the Tech board called "We got robbed!" The description of the Alpenlite doesn't exactly match yours, but the poster is also from Camarillo and I sure hope that's your spouse rather than another sad incident.

RE: Who are the "no pets allowed" parks?

Many of the PA state parks don't allow pets, or only allow them on a few selected sites.
No kids under 16 allowed at Beacon Hill Campground in Intercourse, PA.
I stayed at the Beacon Hill last month. It even advertises itself as "Quiet Camping for Adults". Guess what, adults can be noisy too.
The sites are a typical smallish size. The site next to me had a popup camper, a small yippy dog and a guy who smoked but not in the camper. At this officially quiet campground, I was treated to yipping, smoking excursions, clanking of tools on the campfire ring, and splendiferous coughing fits just 20 feet from my bedroom window the whole time I was there, except for a 4-hour interval in the middle of the night. At least you can count on kids to sleep through 8 or 10 hours. The following night, I stayed in a nice quiet Cracker Barrel lot.

... There is one CG that actually smells like a open latrine because of the dogs. We don't go there any more. ...
I like dogs, and even most dog owners. But no matter how conscientious they are, they aren't cleaning up the pee and they aren't getting 100% of the poop, and I can smell it. Think about how intensely a campground is used.

RE: A good cleanout!!

I do mine as a "Fall cleaning" rather than spring, to coordinate with the winterizing task of removing anything that shouldn't freeze (toiletries, pump soap, etc.). I also remove anything I haven't used during the past season. I usually travel alone, so why do I need a complete set of dishes for 4 plus all those extra cute plates and mugs?

RE: Doesn't make sense to me...

The contractor was doing demolition and probably had a contract to remove everything in a certain area. Contractors resell all sorts of stuff -- woodwork, radiators -- that are part of their removals, so why not a couple of strongboxes full of antique ca$h?

RE: DC in mid-March?

My daughter went to college in DC, and March was the time of year when you could just look at the kids and tell where they were from: The kids from Minnesota were wearing shorts, and the kids from Florida were wearing parkas. Being from New England, she was in the "light jacket" middle ground.
March is fine if you're prepared to dress for it. IMHO, you'd be better-off arriving in mid to late March to ensure that you don't miss the peak bloom.

RE: Help me figured this one out

My mom works in human resources for a company here in Wisconsin. ... told me I need to call the company and tell them I do not want my other 6 days of vacation paid to me.
The ten days they did pay me I will now have to claim as vacation time on my unemployment. I hope this explaination helps.
It helps, but it's just one step on the long road to understanding. Why would you not take the money, even if it delays or reduced your unemployment pay? Exactly what is the balance here -- what are you giving up in unemployment benefits if you take the 6 days' pay? Most likely, you would still come out ahead in the long run since delaying the start of collecting benefits would also delay them running out. It still looks like turning down free money, to me.

RE: Trade-in or re-sale value of RV with pets

I think a lot has to do with if the pet has had accidents in the RV and if the pet was kept clean. Our dog has never had an accident in the RV and we keep him clean.....
I think none of us, even pet fanciers, would want an RV or a stick home in which a pet had had serious accidents. And as noted above, people with allergies have to assume that there have been pets in a unit, no matter what they're told.
I know that the previous owner of my RV had dogs because I met them, and I know that somebody before her had cats, because there's a cat door cut into the bathroom wall. But you'd never be able to tell otherwise, since the place was kept clean. Normal pet evidence (not pee) is much easier to remove than smoke, which penetrates everywhere.
So I say: Take the dog, keep things clean, and don't worry about resale.

RE: Help me figured this one out

... Actually I would prefer to get my vacation paid in increments so that my taxes on that amount made wouldn't be as high as one lump vacation payout. The more you make the more they take!!
WHen my husband got laid off many years ago, he couldn't collect on unemployment as long as he was still getting payouts for his back vacation and severance pay. That was long ago and far away, but you still should look into this. And of course, no matter what rate they use for withholding, you'll get the same amount a your tax refund in just a few months.
It's my understanding that since you have been laid off, you don't work there any more. They HAVE to pay out money they owe you including vacation. You don't have the option to ask them to hold onto that money so you can pretend you still work there and retain your seniority or vacation rate. I'm sure the Unemployment Office in your state can give you accurate general advice about your state's legal process.
Three weeks ago today I lost my job. The owner said if we wanted our vacation paid out to let him know on October 17th....
I guess I just don't understand what the alternative was to getting the vacation "paid out."

RE: Don't let credit card out of your sight!!!!

... he found someone had used his credit card number to pay a speeding ticket, two car payments, car insurance, rent, payments on a credit card and some other purchases. This rat took over $2,000. He has been at his bank to get this mess straightened out. The bank said they would put the money back in his business account. ...
1. If he's dealing with his bank and they're "putting money back," then it sounds like he was using a debit card, not a credit card. Many actual credit card companies have sophisticated programs in place for detecting irregular spending patterns, putting out an alert, and freezing the card and/or contacting the cardholder to verify the activity.
2. Where they heck do they live, where you can pay for "a speeding ticket, two car payments, car insurance, rent, payments on a credit card and some other purchases" all for $2000?

RE: Florida Homeowners; Concrete/Stucco house good investment?

Last year, I sold a stucco-on-frame house that had been built in 1922, in Boston. The only repairs it had ever needed were some filling in of cracks from the original settling of the house. I guess the quality of stucco can vary. It was windproof, waterproof, and didn't even need any painting-type updates during the 9 years that I owned it.
When my niece had a house built in West Palm Beach in 2001, she did tons of research about safety, insurance, hurricanes, etc. and she chose to build a block-and-stucco house, complete with tiles on the roof, automatic hurricane shutters, etc. It's still in perfect condition. An additional factor to consider in the warm climate is that this construction is immune to termites and other varmints.
